How many accounts can be opened by a customer in Post Office?

Customer can open only one Saving account in Post Office across all over India as per rule but there are certain conditions also applied. Lets have a look

 1: Single account- 

Only one account can be opened by a customer in Post Office all over India. In other words, a customer can not open more than one single account in same Post Office or in other Post Office all over India. Only resident Citizen of India is eligible to open account and NRI can not open account in Post Office (Ruling condition - Rule no. 47, 1, a, (i) of POSB (CBS) Manual- 2021) 

2: Joint Account- 

One individual can open any number of joint accounts with any other adults, provided that only one joint account can be opened in the joint name of two individuals. One Joint account by two adults only can be opened in Post Office all over India. Now the customer can also open other joint accounts with other adults. For example if customer A and B have a joint Saving account, Customer A can also open another Joint account with other adult C; similarly a customer can open any numbers of account jointly with different different adult customer. (Ruling- refer rule no. 47, 1, (a), i of POSB (CBS) Manual-2021) 

Case (i)- What if one of the joint account holder died and the remaining customer already have a single account? Answer- In that case, the later account shall be treated as irregular from the death of the other joint account and the customer have to close one account.  

3: Pension Account- 

There is no separate Pension Account in Post Office from 18.12.2019 (SB Order 13/2019). However, all the accounts opened before 18.12.2019 shall be operative and regular as usual. 

 4: Basic Saving Account- 

Only one single account can be opened under Basic Saving Account. Such type of accounts are opened for any Government benefit and any other deposit can be made in these accounts.  

Note: An individual can open a Saving Account along with another Basic Saving Account. 

 5: Minor account as Guardian- 

One minor account as guardian can be opened in Post Office all over India. Summary- Any number of accounts can be opened across all the Post Offices by the depositor(s) but NOT more than one Single, One Joint account, One minor account as Guardian.
